Creative Dramatics - Denise Iketani

Student workshops focus on theatre games and basic storytelling techniques. Students learn simple theatre and storytelling techniques to increase story comprehension, sequencing and vocabulary skills. Exercises will be used to enhance understanding of theatre concepts and vocabulary, such as projection, articulation, body focus and “cheating out.” Exercises will be varied to include learners of all levels.

Creative Dramatics/Play-writing: Kathryn Johnson Schwartz
This residency uses theatre arts to imbue young "actors-in-training" with self-confidence, self-control over their bodies and voices, and the skills to be heard and understood. Using the poetry of Emily Dickinson to model these skills at the beginning of every workshop session, the artist continually reinforces prior lessons and continues a dialogue about what it takes to be heard, understood, and felt by others, both onstage and in everyday life. Students learn theatre concepts, such as stage presence, project, articulation, and areas of the stage.

Mime/Physical Theatre: Sharon Diskin
Students learn about the ancient art of mime, focusing on non-verbal communication and using movement and facial expressions to tell a story. Before there was spoken language, primitive people used mime as a way of sharing their experiences with one another and “telling” stories. Students will learn skills in this ancient art form to tell non-verbal stories that focus on our shared modern human experiences. At times funny, at times poignant, the students will experience the vast array of human experience and connection through theatre that is at once telling, unique, and exciting. Students learn about body focus, eye contact, cause and effect, conflict, and how to break down a story into sequential order.
