INTERNATIONAL FOLK DANCE

Traditional folk dances are taught in connection to different cultures and communities throughout the world (Europe, Asia, Africa, North America). In addition to learning the dance steps, students learn about the geography, history and culture of each dance. Some examples include Native American, Polynesian, and American Line, Square and Circle dances. Lessons are crafted to be age-appropriate and aligned to core standards in History/Social Science, English/Language Arts and Physical Education.

FLAMENCO

The roots of Flamenco dance and music can be traced back 1,000 years, to its journey from East India in Asia to Spain in Europe. Students learn about Flamenco dance, history, culture, poetry, and art. Different rhythmic patterns, using clapping, snapping, and percussive footwork are introduced to create a sequence in Flamenco. Students present their dance sequence for the Flamenco Fiesta on the last day of the residency.

HIP HOP

Students learn the history, culture, vocabulary, and fundamental footwork/movement of Break Dance. Students explore the concept of ‘freestyle’ and ‘improvisation,’ while applying the use of space, levels, shapes, patterns, freezes, and flow. Students build community and teamwork through their ‘crews,’ as they work together to prepare for the final, high-energy dance battle among peers. Students develop stage presence and confidence with the support of their peers throughout the process.
